Lafayette School Board To Search For Interim Superintendent

At first glance, you might wonder why the Lafayette Parish School Board wouldn't want to find a permanent replacement as soon as possible for Dr. Donald Aguillard. Dr. Aguillard, the current Superintendent of Lafayette Parish Schools is set to retire at the end of his contract in May. So there is a need for a new superintendent but why is the Lafayette Parish School Board opting to find an interim replacement?

I would say the answer would be common sense. A phrase we haven't been able to use with a lot of school boards in Acadiana lately but I think the Lafayette Parish School Board is on to something. Here's there reasoning.

There will be a school board election in January, so there could be a whole new board in place. So, why not let the board that that will actually have to work with the new superintendent choose the new superintendent? See, common sense it isn't totally dead.

The current board will accept applications for the position of superintendent via the Lafayette Parish School Board website and of course the U.S. Postal Service. The deadline for applicants is March 30, 2019.

The interim superintendent will be chosen to serve from May 18th of this year until June 30th of 2020. The applicants for the interim position will have to meet all of the certifications necessary in accordance with local and state policy.

The plan is to have a permanent replacement for Dr. Aguillard in place by the end of the interim superintendent's contract. As always if you have a question or a comment about the inner workings of the school board you may contact your representative and I hope you will.
