Some of Acadiana's best spellers competed last night in the Kiwanis Regional Spelling Bee with hopes of making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Orlando later this year.

Congratulations are in order to Jonah Stout who attends John Paul the Great Academy for winning the regional bee.

Jonah correctly spelled the word "precursor" to claim the top prize. He will now head to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Orlando on July 8.

The spelling bee is broken up into two bees: one for students in grades 3-5 and another for those in grades 6-8.

Typically, the two bees are held at the same time, but to follow social distancing guidelines and to allow more spectators for each student, the two bees were split up and staggered this year.

Prizes were awarded to first through third-place finishers in both bees.

Below are all of the winners from last night:

Little Spelling Bee (grades 3-5):

1st place: Catherine Toups - John Paul the Great Academy
2nd place: Emily Barnett - Our Lady of Fatima
3rd place: Mollie Grace Duplantis - Cathedral Carmel
