Can You Legally Bet on Who LSU’s New Coach Will Be?
(KMDL-FM) It's not very often we have dust that needs to settle here in the swamps and bayous of Louisiana, but following this weekend's big news regarding Brian Kelly and the LSU Football program, there is plenty of "dust" still floating in the aftermath of Kelly's dismissal as Head Coach. Some of that "swirling particulate matter" following Kelly's firing concerns the "odds" of who the new LSU coach will be. Can you actually bet on that?
Sports wagering has become a part of the Louisiana landscape over the past year or so. Even though legal wagering on sports has only been around for a few years, there has always been a betting culture in Louisiana. However, most of the new money is being found on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel as opposed to the backroom at the barber shop where "there's a guy".

The folks at NOLA.com have published a story with all sorts of speculation as to who the new Tiger head man will be. The story features the odds of guys like Lane Kiffin, Jimbo Fisher, Nick Saban, Jon Sumrall, Dabo Swinney, and yes, even Nick Saban, of who might get the job.
The NOLA story sites odds from several sources, including Bookies.com and BetOnline.com. Hmm, how come there are no FanDuel or DraftKings numbers to peruse?
That's because placing a wager on who the new LSU Football Coach might be is illegal in Louisiana and the United States. The "odds" you see quoted are from offshore sites. Many of those kinds of sites are unregulated, and there is often little recourse to collect on your winnings, although those sites are very quick to take your money.
According to Google, Bookies.com is: "a US-focused online hub that provides information, expert picks, and reviews related to legal sports betting. It is owned by Gambling.com Group, a digital marketing company for the iGaming industry. The site does not function as an online sportsbook itself, but rather guides users in comparing and choosing where to place bets legally. "
And for further clarification on BetOnline.com, Google says they are: "a privately held online gambling company offering sports betting, online casinos, poker, and wagering on horse racing."
The reason you can't make a bet on who LSU's new coach will be via the more traditional sports wagering outlets is pretty simple. The hiring of a coach is not an approved type of bet because it's not a contest; it's an administrative hiring decision. Therefore, the outcome of the decision is not determined by skill, luck, chance, or any of those other factors that play into sports wagering.
For all we know, the decision on the new LSU coach has already been made. It's kind of like those who still don't know who LSU's new president will be. We aren't saying, but don't forget to look surprised when this is announced.
Just like we won't be surprised when it's the Governor of Louisiana who makes the LSU Coaching announcement instead of the LSU Athletics Director. Okay, the AD might be speaking the words, but Jeff Landry is pretty talented; he might have some ventriloquism skills we weren't aware of.
