Some surprising news to report in local high school sports as Teurlings Catholic's head football coach Sonny Charpentier announced he's stepping down after 22 years at the helm. The school made the announcement in a press release Tuesday night.

Charpentier will however remain at Teurlings as the athletic director, a position he's held since 1998.

The 60-year-old told his team and staff the news following their playoff loss last Friday against Parkview Baptist.

Charpentier originally joined Teurlings back in 1998 as the head basketball coach and football assistant. After leading the Rebels to the 1995 Top 28 tournament, he took over the reins in football that fall.

Under his guidance, the Rebels became a consistent contender in the Acadiana area. He guided Teurlings to a 194-73 record including 11 district titles, 11 quarterfinal appearances and 3 state semifinal berths.

Most recently, he led Teurlings to the Division II semifinals in 2015, losing to St. Thomas More.
