The "big game", the Super Bowl, the final act of the National Football League's theater season, no matter what you call it, will happen this weekend with or without Taylor Swift. A lot of people in Louisiana will have only a bettor's interest in the game.

The reason I say a bettor's interest is because neither of the two teams, San Francisco nor Kansas City are well received in Louisiana. We love our Saints and then there are a few misguided individuals who seem to think cheering for Dallas is a good idea but those teams in red, nah, we'll pass.

However, many Louisiana residents will put some money down on the game. They will either go through a legit betting service or they might have "a friend" they do business with. Then there will be these, Super Bowl Squares, you'll probably see a sheet like this one at every Super Bowl party this weekend.

If you've never participated in a Super Bowl squares game it can be pretty simple or your host can make it harder to understand than common core math. But in its simplest form, the game works like this.

How to Create Super Bowl Squares

Picture a 10 by 10 grid where rows and columns are numbered 0-9. One of the Super Bowl teams is listed on the verticle side, and the other is listed on the horizontal side. How you decide to number those squares is up to you. Some people choose to number them straight from 0-9 others roll dice to determine which number goes where, and still others might use a deck of cards to add some randomness to the proceedings.

Most "squares" have a winner after every quarter of play. To determine who "wins" you take the score that each team has at the end of the designated period. If a team has scored double-digits you take the last number as the number of record. Find the square that corresponds to those numbers on the 10 by 10 grid and that square is the winner.

The host of the square determines how much each square costs and the payout for each designated period. If you have a 10x10 game board and charge $10 a square that's a pool of $1,000, so there is real money that can be won.

What Numbers Win the Most in Super Bowl Squares

To understand this you need to understand how football is scored. In point spread betting the key numbers to remember are three, six, and seven.  Those three numbers are also among the most common "winners" in squares. The next most favorable numbers are zero, one, and four. So, if you have a square that has one or both of those numbers on one leg or the other, you might stand a pretty good chance of cashing in.

As far as what numbers appear the most in Super Bowl scores the number seven is the most likely one to appear. It has happened in 20% of Super Bowl final scores. Next up is the number one which appears in 14% of Super Bowl finals. Four, Three, and Zero are the numbers with the next most appearances, they show up about 13% of the time. The worst number to have on one of your squares, according to history, is the number two.

Based on what we have learned and using point spread information on this weekend's matchup between Kansas City and San Francisco the most coveted squares on the board will be those that have the San Francisco score ending in a four and the Kansas City score ending in a 3. Or, a 49ers score ending in a four and a Chiefs score ending in a three.
