It doesn't matter whether you live in Shreveport, Monroe, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, or Maurice there is a good reason for you to visit your hometown post office this week. That reason is this. We realize it's hard to think about Christmas shopping and the mailing of brightly wrapped packages for the holidays when the heat index has been in the triple digits for the past two weeks, but the savvy shopper and the savvy sender will understand that by acting this week you could save hundreds of dollars in postal charges by the time "gumbo weather" returns to Louisiana.

The Post Office will be increasing the cost of their Forever Stamps on July 14th. These stamps allow you to use them in perpetuity no matter what the published price for a stamp happens to be. Do you even know how much a postage stamp costs? Right now you're paying .68 cents for the privilege of mailing a letter first class with the United States Postal Service.

On July 14th the price of a Forever Stamp will increase by a nickel to .73 cents. This increase comes on the heels of the January increase which bumped the cost of stamps from .66 cents to .68 cents. So, you can see the significance of purchasing forever stamps now and realizing the savings later when the prices go even higher.

According to a report published on AL.com stamp prices aren't the only things that will be increasing at the post office you can expect to pay more for these items as well.

  • Letters (1 oz.) - 68 cents to 73 cents
  • Letters (metered 1 oz.) – 64 cents to 69 cents
  • Domestic postcards – 53 cents to 56 cents
  • International postcards - $1.55 to $1.65

The Postal Service noted that no price increases have been proposed for USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, or Priority Mail Express. The Postal Service attributes the increases to its Delivering America Plan. That is a decade-long improvement plan the USPS is working through that will effectively overhaul mail services in the United States.
