(KMDL-FM) The chance for shoppers to save a dollar here or a dollar there means a lot in Louisiana these days. Higher prices on just about everything have hit Louisiana consumers right in the wallet, so the opportunity to not pay sales tax on selected purchases or a Sales Tax Holiday is a popular idea.

The idea of giving shoppers a tax break on certain items works not only as an economic stimulus, but in some cases it reinforces best behavior. For example, many Gulf South states have a "Hurricane Tax Holiday". That's usually held around Memorial Day weekend, which coincides with the beginning of the Atlantic Storm Season.

Over the course of that "sales tax holiday," consumer goods such as generators, battery-operated gear, tarps, fuel, and fuel canisters can be purchased without the extra burden of state sales tax during such a holiday. Although it probably would be a good idea, Louisiana does not have a Hurricane Sales Tax Holiday.

Another sales tax holiday that is popular among many residents of every state that has one is the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday. As you might imagine, that means no state sales tax on items needed for students to return to school.

Items such as computers, backpacks, footwear, tablets, printers, and old school school supplies such as paper, pens, and pencils would be on offer without the added expense of state sales tax. As you might imagine, every parent with a school-age child would find such a sales tax holiday as a major benefit. Louisiana does not have a Back-to-School sales tax holiday.

The third most popular sales tax holiday around the nation is the one known as the 2nd Amendment Sales Tax Holiday, and as you might imagine, it deals with taxes charged on weapons, ammunition, and other merchandise related to hunting and the outdoors.

Louisiana will have a 2nd Amendment Sales Tax Holiday in 2026. It will run over Labor Day Weekend, which is September 4th through September 6th.  It is a great time for fans of the Louisiana outdoors to purchase items needed for the upcoming season and save quite a bit because of the absence of sales tax.

And, unfortunately, we just missed Mississippi's Tax Free Weekend; it concluded on Sunday night. So, why can't Louisiana have a tax-free weekend for back-to-school? That would be a good question for those folks we elected. By the way, you can find some great deals on these items.
