Severe Storms Possible Across Louisiana Sunday

(KMDL-FM) The Storm Prediction Center has placed a large portion of Louisiana "at risk" for severe thunderstorms later in the day on Sunday.  These storms could produce damaging winds, torrential downpours, and even small hail or tornadoes.

The official National Weather Service Forecast from the Lake Charles Forecast Office doesn't call for a large threat of showers. The probability of precipitation this afternoon is only 20%.

How Large is the Severe Storm Threat in Louisiana on Sunday?

But if you recall, on Friday night, a line of strong showers and thunderstorms pushed through the area, and the rain threat on that particular evening was only 30%. Based on current radar scans from around Louisiana, there are already showers and storms popping up not only in the coastal waters but in northern and central Louisiana as well.

The forecast discussion did suggest that while the number of showers and storms would be small, the potential for those storms to explode to severe limits is a possibility. The greatest threat from any of these storms that might form, according to NWS forecasters, is the threat of damaging winds.

Heat Advisories remain in effect for all of Louisiana again today; they will likely be extended into Monday and several other days during the upcoming week. For the most part, rain chances will be small and limited to the afternoon and early evening hours. However, on Thursday, rain chances ramp up ahead of an approaching storm system.

This storm system was supposed to bring "cooler temperatures" to the area by the end of the week, and I guess it will. Forecast highs will be in the lower 90s as opposed to near 100. Overnight low temperatures will be closer to 70 than they will be to 80. And the humidity might be a few points lower as we get to the end of the workweek.

I wouldn't bring out the pumpkin spice just yet, but we do have cooler temperatures coming sooner rather than later, though maybe not this weekend. And you do have a long holiday weekend coming up, and the long-range forecasts look pretty good for Labor Day. How about a quick getaway?
