It's true, Louisiana can get loud. Just ask anyone who has ever experienced a Saturday night in the fall at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge or a Sunday afternoon in the 'Dome in New Orleans. And yeah we can get a little loud and rowdy during Mardi Gras in Mamou, Church Point, Eunice, and Lafayette too. But while down along the bayou we might be known for our good times and raucous parties, it's the "whispers" that keep Louisiana intriguing to so many.

We are a state of secrets. I think would all shudder in disbelief if we knew what some of those secrets they whisper in the legislative halls in Baton Rouge but we're not discussing "those kinds" of secrets today. In fact, we're discussing a place in Louisiana that has earned the honor of "Louisiana's Best Kept Secret".

In an article published on MSN.com, there is a listing for what the editors describe as the "Best Kept Secrets in Every State". In most cases that "secret" is a town. However, despite what our headline says the place honored in Louisiana is not an actual town. But we didn't have enough headline space to write the words "geological oddity" in such a way that it would make sense.

I guess we need to explain, right?

The place chosen in the MSN.com survey is a salt dome. It's known for one thing and that thing is known all over the world. Have you figured out that the Best Kept Secret in Louisiana according to MSN.com is Avery Island?

Yes, the home to world-famous Tabasco Sauce has earned yet another accolade from the national media. It's well deserved. The tours around the McIlhenny Company grounds are something that you won't soon forget. And if you have seen the mosquitoes that live there you'll wonder why the island doesn't have its own insect airport.

Meanwhile, if you're interested in taking a short road trip to see some of the other "Best Kept Secrets" you could make a jaunt to Eureka Springs in Arkansas, or nearby Natchez in Mississippi, or the very New Orleanish ( is that a word) Jefferson Texas in Marion County.

If you'd like to see the entire MSN.com slideshow featuring each state's "Best Kept Secret" you can find that when you click here.
