Mardi Gras Southwest Louisiana has announced that it will not host parades this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The group made the announcement on a post to its Facebook page saying the decision was made following discussion with local medical and public health experts, and government officials.

By the way, Mardi Gras Southwest Louisiana is basically the Lake Charles area. So, cancellations include the Merchants Parade, Children's Parade, Krewe of Krewes Parade and more.

Rebecca Moss, head of the Mardi Gras Southwest Louisiana, says that the cancellations also include other events sponsored by the organization, such as Twelfth Night, the Royal Gala, the Gumbo Cookoff, and the Car Show. Moss also said that it will be up to individual Krewes to decide on how they will proceed with their own private events.

“We truly hate that we cannot have any festivities whatsoever, but at this point, it’s not safe,” Moss said.

She did add that the hope of the organization is that once the weather warms up and COVID dies down, that some sort of Mardi Gras event will be able to be held, perhaps even this spring.

These cancellations follow suit with just about every major city in the state of Louisiana. Only Lafayette's Mardi Gras Association has yet to announce definitive plans for all of its official Mardi Gras parades and festivities.
