A New Iberia man is in custody after he barricaded himself inside a home when officers tried to serve him an arrest warrant on Wednesday night.

New Iberia Police officers were attempting to serve Roy Jeanlouis on a warrant for armed robbery when he ran inside the home on Bank Street. Jeanlouis barricaded himself inside and refused to come out.

The incident began around 6:15 pm.

According to the Daily Iberian, NIPD officers then set up a perimeter outside the home. A little over an hour into negotiations, two other people in the home walked out, leaving Jeanlouis still inside.

Around 8:30 pm, police pushed back their perimeter and shot some sort of canister through a front window of the home. Then around 9:30 pm, police had the suspect's mother calling over the loudspeaker for him to answer the phone to talk.

And just after 10:00 pm, police fired multiple canisters of tear gas into the house. That would eventually work, as Jeanlouis surrendered around 10:30 pm.

According to a spokeswoman with the NIPD, Roy Jeanlouis was initially taken into custody and charged with armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and obstruction of justice from the previous warrant.

After the stand-off, he also faces more charges including simple criminal damage to property, two counts of battery on a police officer, self-mutilation, two counts of resisting an officer, simple escape, and an additional count of felon in possession of a firearm.
