Lafayette Police say a standoff at a residence on Jefferson Street ended with the discovery of the suspect inside the home dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Police were called to the scene in the 500 block of Jefferson Street near downtown shortly afternoon yesterday.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a 32-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound. The victim told police he was shot by a former boyfriend. That former boyfriend was sequestered inside the home on Jefferson Street and refused to come out when commanded by police to do so.

According to reports police attempted to negotiate with the individual. They even brought in members of the suspect's family to try and bring a peaceful end to the situation.

Police attempted to negotiate with the suspect inside the home but after several hours of no response from within the building, a decision was made to send in SWAT Officers.  Upon entry, those officers discovered the body of 64-year-old Malcolm J. Hymel of Lafayette.

Police say their investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing. The individual that was wounded was taken to a local hospital where he was released.
