UPDATE - The Southbound lane of Johnston St. has been reopened.
The Lafayette Fire Department says that the Northbound lane will reopen later today (04/07/21) as soon as first responder and hazmat equipment is removed.

Lafayette Police Department has closed sections of Johnston St. due to a gas leak.

Currently, Johnston Street between Aqueduct Drive and West Broussard Road is closed. Lafayette Hazmat and Emergency officials are on the scene as crews work to repair the gas line.

DOTD says the Northbound lane of Johnston is closed.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area until the leak is fixed.

CenterPoint Energy is expecting the intersection to be closed for at least the next 4 hours.

"Officers have closed off Johnston Street between Aqueduct Drive and West Broussard Road after construction crews working on the busy roadway accidentally hit a 3" high pressure natural gas line while digging.

There are no evacuations at this time as Lafayette Fire Hazmat is on the scene, as well as CenterPoint Energy who is working to repair the broken line."
