(KMDL-FM) This Saturday, May 23, 2026, is an unofficial day of observance in Louisiana. No, I am not speaking of Memorial Day, that's official, that's important, and that is on Monday. The "event" that I am describing on Saturday is "Crank Your Generator Day". It's an annual observance of many in Louisiana over the Memorial Day Weekend.

The reason we crank our generators on Memorial Day weekend is that that is usually the last full weekend before Hurricane Season begins. That season gets underway on June 1st. And if you've ever experienced a hurricane, then you know the connection between generators, cranking, and all those goes with big storms and power outages.

Do You Need to Have a Generator if You Live in Louisiana?

For many in Louisiana, having a generator is not a luxury; it's a necessity. Generators keep air conditioners and medical equipment running during power outages. They also keep food storage devices such as refrigerators and freezers running. And if you live out in the country, your septic system might not be "good to go" unless you have a generator.

When you mention generators, the first objection most people have involves price. I think if you look at how much a freezer and a fridge full of food costs that you had to throw out, you'll find the savings monetarily and emotionally are in favor of having a generator.

How Large a Generator Do I Need?

A 22-kilowatt generator can provide whole-house backup for a standard 3,000 to 4,000 square foot home. That means the generator would have enough juice for you to run your air conditioner, freezers and fridges, as well as other major appliances and of course your lights.

The deal is being offered by Prime Energy Solutions. I have had dealings with these folks in the past, and their word is as good as gold. They offer not only generator sales but also service.
