Parents and kids across South Louisiana are busy filling backpacks and pencils boxes ahead of the start of the new school year this week but one item you don't want to forget is the pocket umbrella or lightweight rain jacket. Forecasters with the National Weather Service Office in Lake Charles say rain chances will be on the increase as most of South Louisiana's school systems welcome students back to class.

No, the first few days of the new school year won't be total washouts but there does appear to be a growing threat of some heavy downpours just about the time your youngster will be hitting the carpool line, catching the bus, or walking home from the bus stop in the afternoon hours. No, it's nothing out of the ordinary but rain chances will be elevated compared to "the norm" for this time of year.

Forecasters are suggesting a 50% chance of mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms today, that rain threat elevates to 70% by Tuesday. As we approach mid-week the threat of afternoon storms just about the time the final bell rings will be 80% for Wednesday and then dropping down to 60% for Thursday and Friday.

Naturally, inclement weather will create a little more confusion as kids race for school buses and parents patiently wait in the carpool line. As of now, we don't anticipate any widespread severe weather threat but some of the afternoon thunderstorms could create heavy downpours which could result in some short-lived localized street flooding.

I think the hardest part of this for parents will be getting their youngsters to actually carry their raincoats, ponchos, or umbrellas with them in the morning because, for the most part, the days will start off mostly sunny, with thunderstorms forming around lunchtime or a few hours later.
