Country legend Randy Travis appeared in Fort Worth, Texas, on Tuesday (Sept. 26) to record a performance for a TV show at Lil Red's Longhorn Saloon. Fox 4 News in Dallas-Fort Worth was there to talk with Travis' wife Mary about her husband's ongoing recovery and his dedication to supporting and inspiring other artists; readers can press play above to watch the segment.

After suffering a debilitating stroke four years ago, in 2013, Travis is unable to speak, though he has started singing a little bit in the past year or so. Travis' Fort Worth performance, of his song "Forever and Ever, Amen," was taped for RFD-TV's The Penny Gilley show.

"You just don't give up, and I've often said to the doctor that God doesn't read the medical reports," Travis' wife says in the Fox 4 News segment. She adds, "I think it was one of the Oak Ridge Boys [who] said, 'Well, God's not ready for you, and the devil don't want you,'" to which Travis smiled.

Music has been an integral part of Travis' long and slow recovery process since the 2013 stroke that nearly took his life; his first performance after his hospitalization came in early 2016, when he performed "Amazing Grace" at a friend's funeral in Texas. According to his wife, who accompanies Travis to public appearances, getting Travis out and about is “good for him,” and for those who see him around.

“He enjoys the music, and I think it’s good for him, just to know that the artists that are still out there, that they love him,” Mary tells The Boot. “[I]t’s been a real treat. And it’s always so heartwarming to see the reception they give this man, which, he deserves.”
