It started as a tip to the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's office. A man was taking a stroll along the banks of the Mississippi River. He noticed there were some suspicious looking packages on the bank. He made a call to the sheriff's office.

That's when law enforcement went to work and the pay off was huge. $18-million worth of cocaine off the streets of cities and towns in America.

Commander Eric Becnel said that the United States Department of Homeland Security has been called in to help with the investigation since the packages of pure cocaine that were recovered were wrapped in a manner that is consistent with international drug trafficking.

Becnel told the Louisiana Radio Network about the discovery of the cache of illegal drugs. The almost 200 pounds of pure cocaine represents the largest single seizure in Plaquemines Parish history. There were 81 individually wrapped packages of cocaine. Each one weight about one kilogram.

We're attempting to determine how those drugs wound up in our parish.

As of now there have been no arrests made in connection with seized contraband. Detials about where the drugs were discovered are being held in confidence at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
