Don't look now but the kids have less than two months of school left. Have you made summer plans yet?

Summer camps are a favorite of many and South Louisiana Community College will be offering plenty to do for middle school and high school students.

It's their annual Kids in College Summer Camps and they'll offer the youngsters a chance to be detectives, life-savers, chefs, video-game makers, roller coaster designers, and much more.

The camps are scheduled throughout June across multiple campuses. Below is a detailed listing of all your kids can sign up to do.

 

Up Up and Away (Aviation Maintenance:  Grades 9-12) June 1-3, New Iberia Campus. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost: $105.

Are you interested in learning about airplanes and how they work? Have you ever flown before? Not only will you have a chance to take flight, but you will learn about all the working parts of small to large aircraft carriers. Campers will learn to repair engines and the proper way to check an aircraft before takeoff. Instruction will be provided in various processes including oxy-fuel cutting, shielded metal arc welding, flux-core arc welding, gas metal arc welding, pipe welding, plasma arc cutting, and 6 GR. Students spend 90 percent of the time welding and approximately 10 percent on theory, plate preparation, and clean-up.


Jack of All Trades (Welding: Grades 11-12) June 1-3, T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas; (Welding: Grades 11-12) June 13-17, New Iberia Campus; (Automotive: Grades 11-12) June 6-10, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Do you enjoy working with your hands? Are you creative and interested in producing and inventing? Campers will be introduced to different areas of manufacturing and engage in hands-on projects. Participants will learn the basics of welding and automotive technology. This camp is designed for both males and females. It would be beneficial for the student participating in the automotive camp to have a vehicle.


ACT Prep (Grades 9-12) June 6-10, New Iberia Campus; June 13-17, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building; June 27-30, T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Have aspirations to attend college upon graduation from high school? Now is the time to start preparing for your future. Participants will be given instruction and guidance on proper ways to study and materials to prepare for taking the ACT exam.


Robotics (Grades 6-8) June 1-3, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost: $105.

Campers will be introduced to the fundamentals of robotics, basic programming, and robotic operations. Campers will be provided with a basic electronics kit to practice construction skills, including soldering/de-soldering and components testing.


Roller Coaster Derby (STEM/Engineering: Grades 6-8) June 1-3, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost: $105.

Ever wondered how roller coasters are built? Campers will build their very own roller coaster out of paper. Yes, paper. Campers will use engineering skills to build the biggest and best roller coaster that can hold a marble for racing. Computer software will also be used to show participants how to design a virtual roller coaster.


Future CSI Lab Tech (Forensic Science: Grades 6-8, 9-10) June 13-17, New Iberia Campus; June 20-24, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Merging the study of biology and chemistry together with law enforcement has become a leading job in today’s industry. Analyzing evidence to solve a crime, identify victims and convict or exonerate suspected criminals are skills the campers will learn when solving their own cases. Campers will learn about fingerprinting and will use analytical thinking to piece together the puzzle to solve the crime.


Cooking with Style (Culinary Arts: Grades 9-12) June 20-24, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. Noon-4:30 p.m. Cost: $105.

Campers will learn basic techniques in cooking. Participants should bring an apron to protect their clothing.


App Maker/Web Page Design (Information Technology: Grades 6-8, 9-10) June 13-17, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost: $105.

Downloaded all those apps for your phone and ever wondered how they are made? Campers will learn the fundaments of web page development, explore applicable software, learn how to write code and ultimately create their own web page and iPhone/Android App.


To Be or Not To Be (Art/Drama/Poetry: Grades 9-12) June 1-3, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building; June 27-30, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Have an interest in the fine arts? Want to express yourself through art, poetry or acting? During the three-day camp, campers will learn about different types of writing and new artistic flairs of art. During the four-day camp, campers will write short skits and create stage ambiance for a grand performance on the last day.


Video Game Maker (Information Technology: Grades 9-10) June 6-10, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building; June 13-17, T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas; June 20-24, New Iberia Campus. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Learn the basic concepts to create your very own video game. Using computer software to create 3D and 2D dimensions, campers will design their own backgrounds and characters, ending the week with their very own video game. This camp is designed for grades 9 and 10, but older children may apply.


STEM-Tastic Camp (STEM/Engineering: Grades 6-8, 9-12) June 6-10, T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas; June 20-24, New Iberia Campus; June 27-30, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building. Grades 6-8 will meet from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each session. Grades 9-12 will meet from Noon to 4:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Take an adventure into the world of engineering with this new STEM-Tastic camp that will teach campers basic engineering practices to create solutions to brainteasers presented to them. Campers will design a new project each day and learn how it relates to everyday real-world experiences. Campers will work with a wide range of materials, including everyday household products.


Be a Life-Saver (Health: Grades 9-12) June 6-10, Lafayette Campus, Ardoin Building; June 20-24 T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas; June 27-30, New Iberia Campus. 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each session. Cost: $105.

Are you interested in learning how you could save the life of a loved one? Do you want to earn money as a babysitter? Are you interested in becoming a healthcare professional? Campers will be taught CPR and will earn a certified CPR card from the American Heart Association. Campers will learn basic first-aid as well as ways to recognize early signs of stroke and heart attack. Campers will be instructed on the care and treatment for those with diabetes, insect and snake bites, heart disease and a host of other medical conditions. At the end of the week, campers will be visited by professional healthcare providers.
