All eyes are on the Gulf as we await Barry’s arrival, expected to make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane. Mary Laurent with SLEMCO joins Brandon Comeaux on OFFSIDES to discuss their preparations for the storm, what kind of impact a Category 1 storm can have as far as wind/rain damage to power, and what advice she has for listeners in preparing/dealing with the storm.

“Early preparations have been made with contractors, suppliers and personnel to ensure we will be able to mobilize immediately to restore power,” said SLEMCO Communications Manager Mary Laurent.

“We are very early in the 2019 hurricane season. Many folks may not have begun making preparations,” said Laurent. “Everyone should be checking supplies and making an evacuation plan, should the need arise. Evacuating is particularly important for those who have medical conditions and who may rely on power for medical equipment. We will restore power as quickly and safely as possible, but a slow-moving system with heavy rainfall, combined with high winds and falling trees could slow down that process.”

SLEMCO provides power to over 109,000 customers in Acadia, Avoyelles, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion Parishes.
