The Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams Defeat Zachary 21-14 In 5A Semifinals
Coming into tonight's game against the Zachary Broncos, Acadiana hadn't been tested throughout the playoffs. The Rams had outscored their 3 previous opponents 161-35 but this semi-final matchup would be a different story. Acadiana came away with a hard fought 21-14 victory to head to the Superdome for the 5A State Championship game.
The Rams would get on the board first with a rushing TD to go up 7-0 with 5:50 remaining in the 1st quarter. They would add to their lead on a 4th and 5 play to go up 14-0 on the first play of the 2nd quarter. The Broncos would respond with a TD of their own to make it a 14-7 game. The Rams would connect on a long TD pass right before halftime to make it 21-7.
The 3rd quarter is where things started getting interesting as Acadiana fumbled the ball on their first 2 drives of the 2nd half. Despite the turnovers Zachary couldn't get anything going in the 3rd quarter. The good news for the Broncos was that the Rams couldn't get anything going either as both teams were held scoreless in the 3rd quarter.
The Broncos cut into the Rams lead with a passing TD to make it 21-14 early in the 4th quarter. The Rams wanted to run the clock down on their next possession and possibly put the game away with a score. The Rams got down to the 1 yard line and had a 4th and goal but the Broncos came up with a huge stop to get a turnover on downs. Zachary had the daunting task of trying to 99 yards to tie the game up against the Rams defense but had no success. The Rams came up with a huge stop to force a turnover on downs to seal the victory.
Acadiana finished the night with 229 rushing yards and 151 passing yards. Dillan Monette finished the game as the Rams leading rusher with 119 yards on 26 attempts. QB Keonte Williams finished the game 5-8 for 118 yards and a passing TD. The Rams defense held Zachary to just 80 rushing yards and 122 passing yards.
Acadiana will face off against the Destrehan Wildcats next Saturday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in the 5A State Championship game. You can catch all of the action on ESPN 1420.
