Who doesn't know the adorable Disney characters Goofy and Pluto? They've been a part of my psyche since the middle 1960s and I think they've actually been around a lot longer than that. Goofy and Pluto, when mentioned together, almost always spark a debate. Not the kind of Ginger versus Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island debate but there is a difference of opinion surrounding the two characters.

The biggest issue that most people have in the Goofy/Pluto conundrum is this. They are both dogs, why don't they act similarly? That seems to be a very good question. I am not sure the Imagineers at Disney have even bothered to take this query on. I guess they figure as long as we're talking about Goofy and Pluto there's no need to define the characters any further.

That's apparently Disney's stance but not the stance of David Ebert. David is a comedian and widely followed contributor on the social media site Tik Tok. David has an entirely not so Disney-fied view of the two characters. I must warn you, that you could lose a little, no a lot, of your childhood innocence if you choose to explore further.

If you didn't watch David's Tik Tok explanation, you really should but here is Cliff's Notes version. David starts the video by explaining that Mickey Mouse is a Mouse and Donald Duck is a duck. He then moves to Goofy who is a dog, right? What about Pluto? He's a dog too?

David wants to know which of the two characters seems "miscast or out of place or in his words is the freak". According to David, the freak would be Pluto. Here's why.

David surmises that in the Disney Universe animal characters who talk and wear clothes are the norm. So Goofy dressing in pants and a shirt, walking upright and saying garrsh is par for the course. However, Pluto only wears a dog collar and walks around on all fours.

Based on David's observations Pluto is crawling around on all fours totally naked in the Disney Universe and he doesn't have to. David even recalled a story from a Disney comic book in which Pluto is given dialogue, in other words, he can talk. Yet, he chooses not to now. I guess we'll chalk that up to Disney Magic.

Meanwhile, on his Tik Tok Channel, David even discusses the conundrum that some of you believe Goofy is not a dog. That he is in fact some other kind of animal.

I have to admit, I have never thought of Goofy as a cow but I can see why someone might think that based on the illustrations. David, I'm glad you cleared this up or at least gave us some better food for thought. As long as it isn't Disney Gumbo, it will be food for thought that I can chew on while I try to get my childhood back.

Speaking of Disney, hey Cinderella, your new house might be right here in Louisiana.
