The unusually quiet tropical season in the Atlantic Basin could take a major turn toward the very active over the next few days. There are two tropical waves that are being monitored by the National Hurricane Center. Both of these waves will have the potential to develop into stronger systems over the next several days.

The first wave which has been designated as Invest 96L is currently located several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands. The forecast for this system is a slight chance of further development over the next 48 hours but a 50% chance of strengthening in the next five days. The forecast models do indicate some strengthening of this system and track forecasts do suggest that the system could become problematic for interest in the Gulf of Mexico by next week. This is of course if the system holds together and in fact does get stronger.

The second and weaker of the two tropical waves is further to the east in open water. The Hurricane Center is only giving this system a 20% chance of strengthening over the next 5 days. As with all tropical entities the further out in time, the more likely the forecast will not be accurate. We suggest you stay tuned to Dave Baker and Rob Perillo with KATC TV 3 and continue to monitor updates on this website and on 97.3 The Dawg Facebook and Twitter Accounts.
