President Barack Obama met with President-elect Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House to discuss a peaceful transfer of power.

The two have a long standing history of differences, but today Trump called Obama a "very good man." When talking about the President-elect, Obama told reporters,

if Trump succeeds, America succeeds

This couldn't have come at a better time as we see protesting in multiple cities around the country in the wake of Donald Trump's stunning election victory.

Trump thanked Obama for the private meeting that was only supposed to last 10 minutes, but went past an hour and a half and could have gone on for "much longer" according to the President-elect.

Obama reiterated that his No. 1 priority over the next few months will be facilitating a transition that ensures Trump is successful. Donald Trump told reporters that he plans on seeking Obama's counsel as President, and several times on their way out expressed that Obama was a "very good man."

Just a few days ago, no one would have said these two men would be sitting in the Oval office praising each other as Trump's campaign was doubling down on their long-standing belief that Obama was incompetent and Obama was cracking jokes on Trump's Twitter privileges being taken away.

This magnanimous tone seems like it could be the new norm for Trump since winning the election. While on the campaign trail, chants of "lock her up" were a staple at every Trump rally, accompanying claims that he would imprison Clinton over her alleged scandals—but during his election night speech, Trump complimented her long history of public service.

We owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country

From citizens to fellow politicians, Trump noted that while some may not have supported him, he still wants to be the best leader for all the American people, and hopes to work with some of the best minds in Washington to do the job.

Before their meeting Obama said he looked forward to making the transitional process smooth, just like Bush did for his team back in 2008. He also told the American people who may be upset over the election results that they should give Trump a chance to lead.

The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy. And over the next few months, we are going to show that to the world.

Let's hope we show the world peace, and not division as a result of this election.
