Residents of Louisiana, there is now more proof than ever that you have a very big reason to hate automated marketing calls, also known as robocalls, more than any other state in the union. Those of us who live in Louisiana are used to being on the top of "bad lists" but this list is more frustrating than it is demeaning.

Whether it's an automated call about your car's extended warranty, a charitable contribution, your health insurance, or just some ne'er do-well scammer who wanted you to pay a relative's bail, we get more of those calls in Louisiana than the residents of any other state.

YouMail, a visual voicemail service that offers spam call blocking has released results of robocall activity across the nation and Louisiana is at the top of the list when it comes to robocalls per capita. The YouMail report said the number is 27.2 robocalls per capita.

Leading the way in unwanted and unsolicited calls was the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. When adjusted for population numbers the state's capital city ranked number one for this dubious distinction. Following Baton Rouge were the cities of Memphis Tennessee, Washington DC, Little Rock Arkansas, Macon Georgia, Birmingham Alabama, and Albany Georgia, and #8 on the list was another Louisiana city, Lafayette.

For those of you who are into numbers, Baton Rouge residents received 45 robocalls per capita, while Lafayette residents were on the receiving end of 30.4 robocalls. The subject of the most robocalls for the month of January was "health care". By the way, Baton Rouge has been at the top or near the top of the robocalls list as blocked by YouMail for the past five years. This is according to a report from Nexstar Media.

What can you do to prevent unwanted robocalls? The folks at YouMail suggest you install call-blocking software on your device. Just to be clear, that's part of what they do so it's not a surprise they'd suggest that. But, they are not the only company that offers such services. You might be able to download software from another company that would do the same thing.

By the way, experts in the field of identity and consumer protection advise you never to answer a call that has been identified as a spam call. Just let it ring. Answering the call signifies to the computer program that is making the call that your number is good and it will likely lead to even more annoyance in the future.
