Acadiana Skies Buzz With Mystery Over Military Choppers
(KMDL-FM) It was shortly after 2 pm on Wednesday, I was grilling a chicken breast on my Lafayette, Louisiana patio when I heard a rumble from above. I am not much of an aircraft enthusiast, but I do recognize the distinctive sound of a helicopter's rotors. My first thought was I would look up and see one of Acadian Ambulances' AirMed units, but no, this was different.
Instead of a smaller, more speedy-looking rotorcraft, the aircraft I saw "lumbering" above my patio and pool was much larger. It looked like the kind of aircraft that I did not want to be considered an "enemy of".

As I mentioned, identifying aircraft from ground level when they are well above the treetops is not one of my stronger talents, but I did deduce that this was not a "civilian" aircraft. It certainly seemed to be "military in nature". And since Lafayette does not have an Air Force facility or active military base, I did some "snooping".

What Were Folks Saying About the Helicopters Over Acadiana Yesterday?
I went to Reddit and the Acadiana thread, and I did see some people were discussing the helicopters. We would have to call all of his hearsay since none of the sources can be verified, but some of the explanations were quite plausible.
One commentator suggested the aircraft was heading for Acadiana Regional Airport near New Iberia. That facility has been known to service and support military aircraft. Perhaps the helicopters were going in for some work, or the pilots were training. Can't confirm that, it's plausible.

Another person who left a comment suggested that having military aircraft in and out of facilities here in Acadiana was more common than most of us realized. I do know we have some top-notch aircraft mechanics in this part of the world, so that's plausible too.
Wait, The Helicopters Were Stopping for Sausage?
Another comment suggested the helicopters were making a sausage run to Nunu's for their "birria" sausage.
I had to Google it, here's what "the Google" says about "the sausage". Birria sausage is a fusion food combining Mexican birria stew with traditional sausage-making, creating a smoky, chili-laden bratwurst. I am willing to bet the folks at Nunu's did not consult "Google" at all in the creation of this sausage. I have never had it, but if Nunu's makes it, I will try it, and I bet it's good. This rumor was not confirmed, but I am still leaning toward it as plausible.
The Funniest Not Real Reason Military Helicopters Were Spotted Over Acadiana?
The funniest response to the query about the helicopters came from the individual with the Reddit user account bayoublacksmith. They suggested the military pilots may have gotten their wires crossed and were about to invade "I-Rayne". Give that man or woman a rimshot.
So, in closing, we can't confirm why military helicopters were flying over Acadiana on Wednesday, but we have some theories, don't we? And here are some more if you just haven't had your sense of intrigue satisfied.
