UPDATE: Arrest Made; St. Landry Beating Caught On Tape [Video]
UPDATE: An arrest has been made in this case.
Law enforcement officials say that an arrest has been made in the case of the beating of a disabled veteran.
Deputies have arrested 29-year-old Kenneth Shergold of Ville Platte.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says,
Video footage caught Shergold sitting in his Kia Rio near the gas pumps when a blue GMC pickup driven by Henry Guidry pulled into the Nuba gas station. Shergold exited his vehicle, approached Guidry from behind, and for no apparent reason, struck him numerous times in the head, back and body with a tire iron. Shergold then dropped the tire iron and continued striking him with his fist and knees. After the beating, Shergold then left the scene in his vehicle.
The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office is asking for your help in identifying the suspect in this surveillance video. The video is rather graphic and shows a younger man physically beating a disabled veteran at a St. Landry Parish gas station.
A tip on the St. Landry Parish Crime Stopper line identifief Shergold as the culprit. Then another tip, this time submitted via the P3 app, stated that Shergold was the person, and that he had allegedly been involved in the assault of a woman at the Super WalMart in Lafayette.
In that incident, the woman says Shergold grabbed her by the arm, and when she pushed him away, she says he told her, "I must have lost my mind".
The man didn't answer questions as to the reason for either of the alleged attack instead asking for his lawyer.
The incident occurred at Nuba Fast Food on Highway 182 in Opelousas shortly after 6 am. The victim says he has no idea who his assailant was. However, you might recognize the individual from the surveillance video or from the vehicle that he used to drive away from the scene.
The victim described his attacker as being 25-30 years old and about 5 feet 7 inches tall. The attacker appeared to be driving an older model Toyota or Honda white or gold in color.
