The ‘Secret’ Side Effect of GLP-1 Meds – Most People Don’t Know
(KMDL-FM) The "shot". I think we all know that when someone is talking about taking "the shot," it's more about weight loss than it is about preventing a disease. Although preventing a disease, or at least helping the body deal with a disease, is the whole purpose behind the development of medications that have come to be known as GLP-1 medicines.
GLP-1 Medications Are Doing More Than Just Controlling Hunger
After prescribing the medication to their patients for either diabetes or weight loss, many medical professionals have also noticed a significant change in what many would consider to be "addictive behaviors". In other words, those who like to drink don't seem to like to drink as much on GLP-1 medications.

Here is where we caution you that, as of now, these are just observations that are being published in medical journals, and there have been no concrete peer-reviewed studies that suggest this is what the medications actually do.

Remember, it's a medicine, and as with any medication, a consultation with a medical professional should always be the first step you take in any treatment that affects your health and well-being.
What Other Cravings Do GLP-1 Medications Seem to Control and Curtail?
Some patients have reported to their healthcare professionals that not only do they not crave alcohol as they once did, but they don't crave nicotine as they once did. Some GLP-1 patients have described a loss of desire to gamble or to go shopping as they once did.

The science behind the medication makes those observations tend to make sense. The chemicals in the medication target the brain's dopamine responses. Those responses are the ones that give you a "good feeling," which is why so many of us enjoy eating or smoking or gambling or drinking.
The medication blunts the effects of the dopamine hit to the brain, making the activity seem less pleasurable. When that happens, the desire decreases and perhaps the behavior changes.
Why Don't They Prescribe GLP-1 Medication to Treat Alcoholism?

Again, we reiterate, there has not been enough scientific study on these observations, but they do appear to be promising. If you're currently using GLP-1 medications, have you noticed any changes like these in your personal life? Make sure you share those with your doctor, not only for the sake of science but for the sake of your health.
