Let's face it, Mardi Gras is right around the corner, and we are already seeing king cakes pop up around Acadiana. Everybody has their own opinion about who has the tastiest treat to celebrate the season - I know I do!

Only in Louisiana has found some hidden gems to purchase your favorite Mardi Gras dessert. We're talking about places that are off the beaten path, but still worth the trip.( I personally cannot WAIT for January 6th to kick off Mardi Gras 2019). Now remember, this is not a scientific poll, just a few places that you might want to try, if you haven't already. And Mardi Gras Day 2019 is on Tuesday, March 5th.

  • Ambrosia Bakery - 8546 Siegen Ln., Baton Rouge. My favorite is their Zulu king cake, with coconut, cream cheese, and chocolate chips.
  • Atwood's Bakery - 125 MacArthur Dr., Alexandria. In business since 1977, these are some tasty cakes if you're in the CenLa area.
  • Julie Anne's Bakery - 825 Kings Hwy., Shreveport. I wouldn't normally think of Shreveport as the beacon of Mardi Gras festivities, but hey, they are in Louisiana
  • Lilah's -1718 Centenary Blvd., Shreveport. Only open from January 5th - though Mardi Gras Day, so better grab one while you can.
  • Meche's Donut King - several locations in Acadiana. Yum
  • Navarre’s Famous King Cakes - 31545 Hwy. 22, Springfield. Owner Ernest Navarre Jr. has been baking up these morsels of perfection since 2005 in this location.
  • Poupart Bakery - 1902 W Pinhook Rd., Lafayette. A traditional french king cake is made here at Poupart's. And it's quite different, but still delicious, than what you might be used to.
  • Proina's Deli - 3101 Kirkman St., Lake Charles. Family owned and operated since 1989, this charming little place packs a big punch when it comes to king cakes during Mardi Gras.
