If you ask a Louisiana resident of a certain age what one of their favorite memories of summertime along the bayou would be, I bet more than a few of us would say a summertime lunch of a fresh tomato sandwich. I know for me, that was a tasty treat that was a cool and refreshing break from being out in the heat of the summertime sun.

The problem with tomatoes is sometimes when they come from the grocery store they just don't taste as sweet as we remember. Especially when we compare them to the fresh fruit from the backyard vines we remember from our youth. But if you don't have a green thumb nor have the time to cultivate your fresh veggies don't worry. We are Shaking Out the Good Stuff just in time for your next home-cooked meal.

Today our Morton Salt Shaking Out the Good Stuff Spotlight shines on a local market that gives residents of New Iberia and the surrounding area a chance to purchase farm fresh produce and home goods but it also helps to put a little money back into the pockets of some of South Louisiana's farm families.

The Teche Area Farmer's Market is a bi-weekly gathering of growers and customers in New Iberia. The Farmer's Market is held on Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. and then there is another market on Tuesday afternoon that runs from 2:30 until 6. The event is held in Bouligny Plaza.

It's your opportunity to select and purchase homegrown vegetables and other homemade items from local vendors. The selection of items runs the gamut from fresh produce to preserves and jams to handcrafted wooden bowls, utensils, birdhouses, garden benches, and more.
