Have you noticed how items that are supposed to make our lives easier almost always wind up being bad for us too? For example the microwave oven, it makes preparing food faster, but most of us it for making popcorn and junk food. Your smart phone, it's designed to keep you connected with Internet and e-mail and texting. It may also be the reason you are not sleeping so well.

For many of us, myself included, the last thing I do at night is check e-mail and messages, it's also the first thing I do when I wake up. I might also hear a text or message chime in the middle of the night too. This need kind of mental activity those small in nature still keeps the brain stimulated so it's harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Reading your e-mail, especially work e-mail, right before bedtime is like running a mental marathon and then trying to go to sleep.  A new study by the Centers for Disease Control says that one third of us are running ourselves ragged by using these time saving devices all the time. Are you addicted to being connected? Can you go a day without your phone or your Facebook? I know I get jittery when I can't connect, perhaps I need a vacation, I wonder if I could go back to 1970?
