Residents from five Acadiana Parishes went to the polls today. Voters in St. Landry, St. Mary, Jeff Davis, Vermilion, and Evangeline Parish will consider candidates for office and a number of tax propositions during this month's primary election.

The biggest race on the ballot in Acadiana is the Fifth Congressional District race. That seat became vacant when Representative-elect Luke Letlow died of COVID-19 on December 28--six days before he was set to take office. Twelve people, including Letlow's widow Julia, are seeking the seat in the special election. While the seat is based in Monroe, the district's boundaries cover eastern St. Landry Parish and the Florida parish.

One race that was supposed to be on the ballot will not appear during this election. An election for Mermentau alderman was scheduled, but nobody qualified for the race. The earliest the race can return to the ballot is October.
