You can usually tell how serious a politician is about seeking a particular office by examining just one facet of his campaign. That one thing is money. That's the fuel that powers the political engine in Louisiana and around the country. Money is transportation, the more you have the further and the faster you can go. State Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle has shown that he has money in the bank and fuel in the tank for this year's run for Louisiana Governor.

Since announcing his candidacy in October of last year the Angelle campaign coffers now boast $1.5 million dollars, with $1.4 million dollars in cash on hand. According to one political expert, that's a pretty serious sign of a pretty serious run for Governor.

"The first way to show you're serious about a race like a governor's race, a statewide race, is to show that you can post some good money numbers.  That you can raise the money necessary to run.  And it appears that he is well on his way to doing that.

That's the observation of University of Louisiana Political Science Professor Pearson Cross, as reported by the Louisiana Radio Network.

Angelle is one of three Republican candidates seeking the Governor's office. United States Senator David Vitter and Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne are the other two Republicans in the race. On the Democratic side, only State Representative John Bel Edwards has declared an intention to run for the state's top job.

The fact that Angelle is demonstrating strong financial support could mean trouble for Edwards and Dardenne. According to Dr. Cross the race is basically a two man affair.

"The real race is going to see who gets into the runoff with David Vitter.  That's what most people think, at this point."

Of course there is still a lot of time between now and late October when Louisiana voters go to the polls. If you thought the just concluded Louisiana Senate race was fun, just wait until we turn the heat up on these candidates for Governor.
