Are you familiar with the Google Doodle? It's a unique thing that search engine giant Google does everyday to honor a person, place or thing that has some significance on that day. Today's doodle honors the birthday of Maurice Sendak, the author of Where the Wild Things Are.

For many kids of my generation and younger this was one of the first books that we read by ourselves. It was a great journey through the mind of a child. Max, the hero of the story, has been sent to his room for misbehaving. It is there he travels through imagination to a magical island full of wild creatures. Max becomes king of the wild things and is asked to stay forever, but he decides to return home.

As a kid I got sent to my room a lot. It was inside the friendly confines of my bedroom that I too traveled to mystical, magical and far off places. Reading Where the Wild Things Are helped me to realize that being a dreamer with a vivid imagination was not a bad thing, as long as you always make it back home in time for supper.
