Carnival Ship Sailing From Galveston Confirms Mexican ‘Crash’

(KMDL-FM) If you are onboard the Carnival Breeze this morning on a cruise that sailed sailing out of the Port of Galveston on August 29th, you probably have a story to tell. It's not very often that the cruise ship you're traveling on hits something, but the Carnival Breeze managed to do just that.

In fact, those close to the incident say the trouble could have been doubled because another Carnival vessel, the Carnival Jubilee, was literally feet away when the Carnival Breeze had its unfortunate incident.

Damaged Cruise Ship To Return to Galveston Today

We are certainly not casting aspersions against the good sailing crew of the Carnival Breeze. Sometimes things just happen, and this appears to be one of "those things". The good news is that the vessel was not damaged in such a way that it could not continue on its itinerary. And perhaps the best news is that no Carnival guests were injured or arrested.

If you've ever had to drive a vehicle that is larger or longer than the vehicle you normally drive, you know how difficult parking can be. Now, imagine you're attempting to parallel park a cruise ship with some 3,600 guests onboard. And you're attempting to park that vessel alongside a concrete pier while your ship is being affected by wind, water, and waves.

Video surveillance of the scene from the Port of Cozumel shows the Breeze attempting to reach its moorings at a rather steep angle compared to the normal trajectory. This unique angle may have played a significant part in the incident.

Facebook video suggests the impact with the pier was substantial enough that it made an audible sound; you can hear that at about the 25-second mark of the linked video. 

Will The Carnival Breeze Continue with Scheduled Sailings Following Pier Incident?

Pictures and videos from the scene suggest some scrapes and chipped paint on the starboard hull near the two access doors and right above the waterline. As we mentioned, no guests or crew were injured.

The Carnival Breeze is scheduled to return to Galveston, Texas, this morning. As far as we've been able to ascertain, the vessel will continue on its next itinerary which is scheduled to depart Galveston later this afternoon.
