In a move much like Netflix, Costco officials are saying they are going to start cracking down on who is using membership cards when shopping at the big box store. Netflix now has new rules on how many people can share their subscriptions.

According to the New York Post, you will need to have your identification ready when you are using self-checkout. You will be required to show your membership card and your photo in order to proceed with purchasing your items.

Costco told Insider,

We don't feel it's right that non-members receive the same benefits and pricing as our members.

The main money generator for Costco is the memberships that people pay for according to the company.

You can expect to pay $60 a year for the membership at Costco. There are other plans as well according to their website. If you decide you want to go for the Executive Membership for $120, here is what it offers:

  • $120 membership purchase
  • Include free Household Card
  • Valid at worldwide locations
  • Annual 2% Reward on qualified Costco purchases
  • Additional benefits, including savings on Costco Services, things like deals on pet insurance
  • Extra benefits on select Costco Travel products
