Travelers in Louisiana who live near airports that are served by Delta Airlines will soon have a new choice in destinations when it comes to resort destinations. It's not like Louisiana vacationers aren't already going there. It's just that in the very near future getting to the resort will be a lot smoother and a lot safer.

Mexico is a destination that is quite popular with tourists from Louisiana. Every year tends of thousands, if not more, Louisiana travelers make the short joint south across the Gulf of Mexico to enjoy the sun and sand of Mexico. The problem with Mexico is they seem to a have a drug related violence problem that keeps many tourists away.

As someone who has experienced the protocols and the procedures travelers have to go through to get from the airport in Cancun to the resorts of the Riviera Maya I can tell you it's quite unnerving.

Why was it unnerving?

To me there is nothing relaxing about climbing on to a bus with an armed guard on board. That's a red flag for me. The fact that our bus had to go through two security checkpoints with armed Mexican soldiers inspecting the bus and even coming on board did not add to the "relaxation" of the moment either.

This where the new Delta Airlines service is going to ease the minds of so many travelers. That's because Delta's new service to Tulum will allow you to skip the nearly two hour bus ride through the Mexican countryside and potential danger and arrive on the beach a lot faster.

Tulum has had a reputation as being a "great out of the way" destination in Mexico. You still get the beauty, the sun, the sand, but you don't have to put up with puking college kids at Senor Frogs or deal with the "almost for free" blanket salesmen.

Thanks to the Internet Tulum is no longer a secret. About two million guest visited the resort town last year. The problem was there was no airport in Tulum that could handle the big jets that bring in the tourist dollars. That will change in 2024 when Felipe Carrillo Puerto Tulum International Airport opens in January.

Delta Airlines will begin service in March of 2024 out of Atlanta. The daily flights to Tulum are timed to begin just as spring break travelers are heading south. So, if you're making plans for spring break in Mexico, this might be a good choice for you.

We should also note that Aeromexico will provide multiple flights to Tulum. They are part of the same "Sky Team Alliance" that Delta and many other airlines share. Many of those Sky Team Alliance partners will route flights through Mexico City with a connection to Tulum. This still keeps travelers in a secured environment and off the Mexican roadways.
