Fundraiser Jambalaya May Have Sickened Dozens, Killed One
Louisiana's health department says that salmonella from a chicken and sausage jambalaya at a softball team's fundraiser in Columbia, Louisiana may have killed one person and apparently made dozens of people ill.
Department of Health spokeswoman Samantha Hartmann says at least 49 people got sick after eating the dish sold on Monday, with 31 having to be hospitalized.
Doctors expect more illnesses to come out of this because more than 300 plates may have been sold. The gastrointestinal illness sometimes develops up to a week later.
The health department has advised any uneaten food from the fundraiser be thrown away.
Samples from five people tested positive for salmonella while an autopsy will determine if the death was caused by salmonella.
