Acadiana native and perennial politician Troy Hebert has his sights set on a seat in the U.S. Capitol.

According to our news partner, KATC, Hebert announced his candidacy for U.S. Senator.

Hebert said he plans to run as an independent among a field of GOP candidates for the Senate seat.

Hebert resigned in December after five years as Louisiana's Alcohol & Tobacco Control Commissioner. He also served as a member of both houses of the Louisiana Legislature.

The election will determine who fills the seat vacated by current U.S.Sen. David Vitter who announced he would not seek reelection following his unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.

U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany, R-Lafayette, U.S. Rep. John Fleming, R-Minden, and state Treasurer John Kennedy, have also announced their candidacy.
