The chess match that is the battle of wills between the Louisiana Legislature and Governor Bobby Jindal has just gotten a little more interesting. Tuesday we reported that the house leadership felt they had passed enough revenue generating legislation to insure cuts to Louisiana's higher education system would not be necessary.

Governor Jindal reiterated his position that any legislation that created a tax increase on Louisiana citizens would be vetoed. The way the current legislation was written there was no way the Governor would approve. This set up what appears to be a typical government stalemate with Louisiana's higher education system caught in the  middle.

Late Tuesday the House leadership stated that it would be prepared to authorize an override session if the revenue generating bills they had already passed were vetoed. Joel Robideaux Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee told the Louisiana Radio Network,

I'm to do whatever we have to do to make sure this funding is in place for higher ed and health care, including coming back for a veto override.

Right now the threat of a veto and an override session are pure speculation. Voters of Louisiana do need to start making their voices heard. Katrina Jackson, a representative from Monroe suggested this,

Whether or not we override the governor depends on one simple thing, whether the people will rise up, begin to call and e-mail these legislators and say enough is enough.

What a novel idea, voters contacting the people they chose to represent them to actually represent them. If you side with the House legislation, let your representative know. If you want your representative to support Governor Jindal, let them know that too.

We can't blame the legislature for our apathy. Let your voice be heard the future of our state is far too important for you, the voter and citizen, to sit on the sideline and do nothing.
