Having just returned from a visit to Australia and New Zealand earlier this year I can tell you there are a lot of Australians I would not mind hugging. I am pretty sure they would mind me hugging them but this holiday is about sharing the love, not calling the police.

Today is Hug an Australian Day, was the brain child of a wellcat.com. A quick check of their website explains the reason they think Aussies should be hugged. It's to show support for a great nation that has always given our country a lot of support.  They also sell herbs. I am guessing that is the real purpose of the website but you have to give credit where credit is do.

In my travels to the "south side" of the globe I found the people there to be very engaging. I compared the attitude of most of the Aussies I met to those attitudes of South Louisiana. They are a people that love having a good time. They are a hard working lot too. However, when it's time to play, they play harder than they work.

They have their own version of joie de vivre and they celebrate each day in a robust way. I felt very safe in the big cities of Sydney and Melbourne. I felt very connected in the far off places like Phillip Island.

My suggestion to you is find an Aussie and give him or her a big ol' South Louisiana bear hug.  I am sure they will appreciate it. Just remember "down under" is a description of where Australia is, not where you should attempt to hug.

Here is a video of my close up encounter with a young kangaroo.
