We Now Know What’s Next for Six Flags in New Orleans

It's been almost 18 years since Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans and closed the gates of Six Flags in New Orleans for good. But even after all of that time, there is still fascination about what happened there and the potential development that could improve life in the area known as New Orleans East.

The city and developers have come to an agreement on a path forward to redevelop the land. This week, the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority board picked the so-called Bayou Phoenix master plan for the area. In a statement to WDSU News, In a statement, the Board said,

"With the approval of the master plan, the developer can continue to move forward with essential tasks, including negotiating the ground lease agreement. NORA is excited to see this process unfold and anticipates that this project will bring renewed economic vitality to the area, offering new opportunities for local businesses and residents alike."

The plan envisions a complete rebuild of the abandoned park, transforming it into a vibrant entertainment hub. Something that was important to city planners was something that felt like New Orleans. Developers say they plan to incorporate the rich cultural heritage of the city. The plan, and the others that have been put forward for consideration were the topic of a streaming documentary.

Early plans include:

• 2 hotels
• an 18-acre lake
• sports fields
• indoor and outdoor water parks
• convention space
• tv and movie soundstages
