LAFAYETTE, La. — Drivers traveling through a busy section of Lafayette are being asked to find another route Tuesday afternoon after a crash with injuries forced authorities to close part of SE Evangeline Thruway.

Lafayette Police have confirmed that the crash on SE Evangeline Thruway claimed the life of a 50-year-old Lafayette man riding a gas-powered bicycle. Police have also released new details about what investigators believe happened moments before the collision.

The Lafayette Police Department said officers are investigating a vehicle crash in the 2600 block of SE Evangeline Thruway northbound at E. Verot School Road.
Police reported the crash shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday (October 6).
Where Is Evangeline Thruway Closed?
According to Lafayette Police, SE Evangeline Thruway is currently closed at the intersection of Southpark Road.
Traffic is being diverted onto Southpark Road and then to W. Pinhook Road while emergency crews work at the scene and officers investigate the crash.
Drivers who normally use Evangeline Thruway through this part of Lafayette should expect delays and consider avoiding the area altogether.

Lafayette Police Ask Drivers To Find Another Route
Police have confirmed that the crash resulted in injuries, but additional information about the number of people involved or the severity of those injuries was not immediately available.
It is also unclear how long the roadway will remain closed.
Motorists should use caution around the area, particularly along Southpark Road and W. Pinhook Road as diverted traffic could lead to additional congestion.
