LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPEL News) - Our state's medical facilities play a crucial role in providing care and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. Ensuring safety within our hospitals is vital to protect patients from medical errors, infections, and accidents that could result in harm.

Patient safety in Louisiana not only safeguards their health but also fosters trust in the healthcare system.

However, a few facilities fall short of perfection. Several hospitals in Louisiana earned a "C" grade or lower due to various concerning factors. These safety grades aren’t about pointing fingers but empowering patients to make informed decisions about their care and encouraging hospitals to improve.

But the website HospitalSafetyGrade.org has put out its report card on hospitals across Louisiana, and the good news is that there are plenty of "A" hospitals, one with a "D" grade, and no hospitals with a score of "F". However, there is a handful of health centers with a lower score than they'd like due to some pretty troubling factors.

That's why these report cards get published. It's not about naming and shaming, nor is it about scaring folks. It's about letting people make the best health decisions for themselves and letting hospitals know they need to make some adjustments.

Here’s a closer look at the one hospital in Louisiana that received a "D" rating and the reasons behind the low score.

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital - Score: D

According to the report, Lake Charles Memorial Hospital scores below average in the following areas:

  • C. diff Infection
  • Blood Leakage
  • Kidney Injury After Surgery
  • Serious Breathing Problem
  • Accidental Cuts and Tears
  • Harmful Events
  • Doctors Order Medications Through a Computer
  • Safe Medication Administration
  • Communication About Discharge
  • Handwashing
  • Specially Trained Doctors Care for ICU Patients

One of the things to note in this report is the note on doctors ordering medications. The site says that using computer systems instead of writing prescriptions by hand is more efficient because the system can let a doctor know if there are any conflicts or issues with specific medicines chosen.

This report, however, indicates that Lake Charles Memorial doesn't emphasize that in its practice.

The Best in the State?

Among the various "A" grades in the state was Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, Louisiana. It got high marks in avoiding safety problems and best practices to prevent errors, among others.

What Can Hospitals Do to Improve?

Staff Training: Regularly train healthcare professionals on safety protocols, emergency responses, and best practices.

Technological Integration: Utilize technology to streamline processes, reduce errors, and enhance patient monitoring systems.

Patient Experience: Prioritize patient satisfaction by addressing concerns promptly, improving amenities, and maintaining a patient-centric approach.

Performance Metrics: Continuously monitor and analyze safety metrics to identify areas for improvement and track progress over time.

Medication Safety: Implement robust medication management systems to reduce errors in prescription and administration.

Emergency Preparedness: Develop and practice emergency response plans to ensure effective coordination during critical situations.
