In the land of television fathers, he was a good one. He was Martin Crane. His sons were Fraiser a noted psychologist and Niles also a psychologist. They were the mythical Crane family whose story was told weeknights on American television between the years of 1993-2004 on the tv show Fraiser.

Martin Crane was portrayed by British born actor John Mahoney. Mahoney died on Sunday at the age of 77. Before his role on TV as Martin Crane Mahoney was well respected on the stage. In addition to live theater he also had a long tenure in motion pictures.

Mahoney was nominated twice for an Emmy Award and twice for a Golden Globe award although he never won. He did win a Tony Award for his work on Broadway in the play "The House of Blue Leaves"

After Fraiser left the airwaves in 2004 Mahoney returned to his first love, the stage. He was quite active in the Steppenwolf Theater Company and in other Broadway Productions. Mahoney last appearance on a major television show was as Betty White's love interest in the short-lived show "Hot In Cleveland"
