Johnny Manziel's MMA Debut: A Spectacle Or Serious Fight?

(KMDL-FM) The world of Mixed Martial Arts is highly respected in South Louisiana. We have had some incredible fighters come from our home soil. Dustin Poirier, Daniel Cormier, Derrick Lewis, all come to mind when we think about action inside "The Octagon". One person none of us probably thought of in this context was former Heisman Trophy Winner Johnny Manziel, but yeah, he's doing the MMA thing now.

Or we should say he did the MMA thing this past weekend. It was one of those bouts where a social media influencer gets in the ring with someone they probably should get into a fight with and this time it was Johnny "Football" against Bob Menery. The "bout" was part of the UFC event at the Apex Center in Las Vegas this past Saturday night.

How Old is Johnny Manziel Now?

The tale of the tape showed Manziel entering the contest at 33 years of age. Menery entered the bout at the age of 38. Neither gentleman looked the part of a battle tested ring warrior. In fact, I think I have seen better fights on cruise ships than those in attendance in Las Vegas saw on Saturday night.

At least Manziel has the pedigree of an athlete. He was pretty good when he played at Texas A&M. He was good enough at football to be chosen by Cleveland as the their top choice in the 2014 NFL draft. He stayed and played with the Browns for a couple of years before stepping away from football.

We know at times on the football field Johnny Manziel was brilliant at improvising plays and getting himself out of tricky situations. How did that knowledge translate to MMA? You can see for yourself.

If you're used to watching Dustin or Daniel fight, then this will look extremly not like that. According to some media reports Dana White the braintrust behind the resugance of MMA was laughing the entire time.

Yeah, you are more likely to see bigger and better brawls at a Black Friday Door Buster at Walmart than what you saw here. But these kind of bouts do serve as a great reminder that regular guys probably shouldn't fight. Let's just use our words and call our lawyers, it will be a lot less embarassing than whatever this was.
