Lafayette House Fire Leaves One Dead
One person is dead following a house fire in Lafayette last night.
According to Lafayette Fire Department spokesperson Alton Trahan, they responded to a reported house fire last night at 227 Benjamin Street shortly before 8:40 pm. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was fully engulfed.
Occupants of the home who safely made it out told emergency personnel that someone was still inside the home. Firefighters searched the home and found the victim dead in a bedroom.
And this morning, the victim has been identified as 22-year-old Brock Johnson.
Trahan says that Johnson was inside the home with his mother, stepfather, siblings, and other relatives when the fire happened. Those relatives heard a loud boom coming from Johnson's room before they noticed the fire.
Everyone else in the house escaped.
The State Fire Marshal's Office and the Lafayette Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire while the Lafayette Parish Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of Johnson's death.
