Local businessman Bob Giles of Giles Automotive has donated $35,000 to the Opelousas Police Department for the purchase of 55 bullet proof vests.

A press conference will be held to present the Department with the vests this Friday, July 29th at 10am.

Every police officer on the Opelousas Police force will now have a bullet proof vest.

"We cannot show enough gratitude to Bob Giles. With the rash of police shootings around the country these bullet proof vests could not have arrived at a better time," says Chief Donald Thompson of the Opelousas Police Department.

Bob Giles commented, "I made the donation to help save the lives of our local heroes and help them feel more secure when they go out to do their job protecting our community. The arrival of the bullet proof vests came at a much needed time."

Giles went on to say, "The courageous officers in every state need the support of their communities. I encourage all business owners, large and small, and especially my brothers in the car business to donate to their local police departments."

If you'd like to help out, donations can be made to police departments through various outlets. Baton Rouge is asking for donations to the East Baton Rouge First Responders Fund. Dallas is utilizing donations from the Russ Martin Listener's Foundation and the Assist the Officer Foundation.
