Which Louisiana Cities Face The Highest Storm Risk This Week

(KMDL-FM) Louisiana's weather forecast is about to undergo a bit of a transition this week. Our weather conditions will go from simply oppressively hot to oppressively hot with a risk of severe thunderstorms to start the week; then things will settle into more of the typical weather pattern of afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms breaking the heat of a summer afternoon.

Sunday saw very few storms form in the late afternoon, but those that did spawned severe weather warnings and watches. The same can be expected today. The bulk of the severe weather will be bounded by I-49 on the west and U.S. Highway 84 to the north.

What Is the Severe Weather Risk Across South Louisiana on Monday?

In other words, the cities of Lafayette, New Iberia, Morgan City, Baton Rouge, Krotz Springs, and Baton Rouge have a better chance of stronger to severe storms than, say, the people who live in Lake Charles, Jennings, or Sulphur might experience.

The risk for severe storms is a little higher over the Atchafalaya Basin and extreme southeastern Louisiana than it is over Lafayette, New Iberia, and Opelousas. Regardless, if a shower or storm does form, there is a pretty good chance it will produce gusty winds, heavy rains, and frequent lightning.

How High Will The Heat Index Be in South Louisiana Today?

Heat is the other weather concern today; a Heat Advisory will be in effect from 11 am until 8 pm today. There is a strong possibility another advisory will be issued for tomorrow as well. Afternoon temperatures will approach 100 degrees. The heat index, or feels like temperature, during that time of the afternoon will feel as warm as 112 or higher.
