The Louisiana Lottery and the Powerball game suggest through their research that 57% of Americans will purchase at least one lottery ticket per year. Most lottery players are not regular lottery players. Perhaps that is why over $110,000 in lottery wins in Louisiana are set to expire in the next 17 days.

The big wins were reported in the state's most popular draw games, Powerball and Mega Millions, and I can't help but speculate the tickets were purchased by someone who isn't a regular player. Or maybe the ticket purchasers bought the tickets and stuck them in a pants pocket, purse, or console of a car.

Did you look yet? You need to. Did you know that unclaimed lottery prizes total more than a billion dollars almost every year?

What Happens If No One Claims A Prize in Louisiana Lottery Games?

For the answer to that question, here is the response courtesy of the Louisiana Lottery's official website.

According to the Lottery's statute, unclaimed prize money is returned to players in the form of prizes and promotions, such as increased payouts on scratch-offs and additional second-chance promotions.

So, the Lottery doesn't "keep the money" they redistribute the "wealth" to coin a phrase by using the proceeds from the unclaimed winner to fund more and better lottery experiences for those who choose to play.
