How Louisiana Mail Will Be Affected During the Government Shutdown
(KMDL-FM) The United States Government "shut down" as of October 1, 2025. Over the past five days moving into the sixth one I have come to find out that I, along with a lot of people that I know, have no idea how a "government shutdown" actually affects me directly. The biggest concern for most people I spoke with was about mail service. Will Louisiana residents continue to get mail delivery during the government shutdown.
Oddly enough the questions about mail service were originally brought up during a discussion about Amazon Prime Big Deal Days. That's the October shopping event the online retailer is promoting over the next few days.

Amazon, like every online retailer depends on prompt and effecient delivery of packages so a slow down in postal delivery would be detrimental. And if Amazon was affected by this government shutdown, I promise you, we would have heard about it by now.
How Will the Government Shutdown Affect Mail Delivery in Louisiana?
Except Amazon uses their own fleet of delivery personell to take care of most of their packages and parcels. So, there's no real concern that your Amazon Prime Big Deal Days purchases won't arrive as ordered.
The same can be said for any packages that UPS, United Parcel Service, will be handling for you. Same for Fed Ex. Or, if you ship internationally you might use the services of DHL, they're not affected by the U.S. Government shutdown either.
Well as some 750,000 federal employees wait learn their fate this week about furloughs, staff reductions, and job elimination, none of them will have to wait on that notification if it is supposed to be delivered by the United States Postal Service. That's because despite the government shutdown, it will be business as usual at the Post Office.
The United States Postal Service is not funded by your tax dollars so therefore mail delivery is not impacted by this or any government shutdown. The agency made that clear in a statement that was issued nearly two weeks ago.
The United States Postal Service Will Not Deliver Mail On These 11 Days
The USPS does observe the 11 Federal Holidays as recognized by the United States Government which means they're offices are closed on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr Birthday, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Incidentally if you receive Social Security benefits or Medicare or Medicade benefits those benefits will still be active during the government shutdown as well. If you have questions you can reach out, but some of those offices might not be fully staffed.
